My Message

HELLO, I introduce myself, my name is Joe Sambrook and I have been associated with Northern Air Hospital Radio since 1990. It has been a privilege to be part of this wonderful charitable organisation for so long, with dedicated like-minded people.

My interest in radio started with a weekend course at BBC Radio Manchester. At the time I no intention of being involved in radio, I basically went along to be nosey and to see what went on behind the scenes. Months later my wife Joan spotted a letter in the Manchester Evening News looking for volunteers to collect requests and have a chat with the patients. to keep the record library up to date and keep the studio tidy - I am now a professional with a hoover.

Over the years I have held many positions at Northern Air, Station Manager, Fundraiser and eventually Chairman. Of all the positions, which I have held, I still get the most pleasure from going around the wards talking to patients, and finding out their favorite record and playing it in the request hour.

Hospitals can be quite daunting, at Northern Air we have a slogan saying we put the “Treat into Treatment”. It’s something we are all good at.

These days I have taken a step back from the everyday running of the station, but I’m still there on the periphery. I would like to take this opportunity to wish all the patients in North Manchester General and Salford Royal Hospitals good health and a speedy recovery.
